Why choose Howden for non-standard construction insurance?

As a home insurance broker, we pride ourselves on doing the heavy lifting, so you don’t have to. Thanks to the great relationships we have with our selected panel of standard and specialist home insurers, we make the process of comparing multiple, specific insurance policies, on your behalf, simple and straightforward. What’s not to like?

Here at Howden, we also recognise that each policy needs to be as individual as its owner and their property, and that’s why we provide a personalised service, focused on getting to know you and finding out exactly what you want from your non-standard construction insurance.

Just remember, whether you need to make a claim, purchase a new home policy, or renew an existing one, we’re here to help when you need us.

Benefits of working with Howden:

  • We’re driven to save you time, money, and hassle.
  • Benefit from a tailored service that comparison sites can’t provide.
  • Speak to your local broker, within your community.
  • We’re right by your side in the event of a claim.

What is non-standard construction insurance?

Not all properties are ordinary and often there isn’t a tick box that perfectly reflects your home. A non-standard home is one built from materials that don’t conform to the standard brick or stone walls with a slate or tile roof. Many have been constructed using alternative methods and materials, and these properties can be harder to get insurance for.

That’s the purpose of non-standard construction insurance policies, to cover properties that may be considered higher risk by traditional insurance providers due to the unique characteristics of their construction.

So you have a clearer idea of what we’re talking about, here’s what we believe to be generally considered as forms of non-standard construction:

  • Flat roofs
  • Zinc roofs, copper roofs, green roofs, fibreglass, shingle
  • Cobb, bungaroosh, wattle and daub walls
  • Modular or prefabricated homes
  • Timber-framed or timber-clad properties
  • Homes built from Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs)
  • Concrete houses
  • Eco-homes and Passivehaus or zero-energy building (ZEB) homes
  • Huf Haus
  • Environmentally friendly additions to the home such as solar panel arrays, wind turbines, ground, and air source heat pumps
  • Non-standard outbuildings including garden offices, garden studios and log cabins.

If any of these forms of non-standard construction are included on your property, or even if they aren’t and you believe you have another form of non-standard construction to insure, get in touch with us. Our team can offer straightforward advice and help you get a hold of non-standard construction insurance quotes to suit your unique home and personal circumstances.
