How to check your own car insurance
If you're unsure if your policy is still valid, or want to check your car insurance coverage, here are four easy ways you can check:
Read your insurance disc. Ensure that the disc displayed on your windscreen shows the correct vehicle registration and valid cover dates. Irish law requires you to clearly display a valid green insurance disc on your vehicle.
Check your certificate of insurance (COI). You'll receive a COI from your insurer when you take out or renew a policy, providing legal proof of active cover. Confirm the insured car, policy period and ensure who is allowed to drive. Section 6 of an Irish certificate usually lists the permitted drivers.

Use your insurer’s app or portal. Log in to your insurer's customer portal or app and open the relevant policy to view its status.
Search your financial records. Check recent bank or card statements for active direct debits or recent annual payments to your insurer.

Can you check if another car is insured in Ireland?
In Ireland, members of the public cannot check another car’s insurance simply out of curiosity or for general purposes due to strict data protection laws; unlike the UK's askMID, there is no official Irish online lookup tool.
However, you can check whether another car is insured provided you meet certain legally recognised criteria, such as after an accident.
Tip: Unlike insurance, anyone can freely check the motor tax and test expiry dates for any motor vehicle registered in Ireland, (including its NCT or CVRT status) on the government's Vehicle Services website.
Checking insurance after an accident in Ireland
If you need to identify another vehicle’s insurer after an accident, you can submit an enquiry form via the Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland's (MIBI) Identify Insurer After Accident portal.
The Irish Motor Insurance Database (IMID) is the single point of reference for all registered motor vehicles insured in Ireland, containing policyholder details, vehicle registration numbers and and the names of drivers permitted to drive under each policy. The database is managed by the MIBI, and data is shared with An Garda Síochána and the Department of Transport. Here's how you can submit an enquiry form:
Start by downloading the Information Centre Enquiry Form here.
Enter the accident date and the registration number of the other vehicle.
Confirm the country where the accident happened and provide your contact details.
Submit the form to the Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland, which will check for an insurer or advise if the vehicle was uninsured.
How can I check if my car insurance has expired?
The most reliable way to check if your car insurance has expired is to look at the green insurance disc on your windscreen, which by Irish law must display the exact expiry date of your cover. Again, you could also check on your provider's online portal or app, on your COI, or in your emails.
If you're unsure, contact your provider. Ask the insurer or broker to confirm whether the policy is active before driving.
Tip: Renewal notifications must be sent at least 20 working days before expiry in Ireland.
Remember, once your cover ends, driving the car means driving uninsured until a new renewed policy has taken effect. Driving without a valid insurance policy is a criminal offence in Ireland and can result in severe penalties.
