About Our Over 50s Car Insurance policy

Over 50s Car Insurance is designed for experienced drivers who want cover that reflects how they use their car today, not just a standard policy with a different age bracket. Its is aimed at motorists whose driving habits may have changed over time, whether that means fewer commuting miles, more local driving, or more leisure journeys, and it gives access to a scheme built with the more mature motorist in mind. For many customers, it offers a stronger fit than standard car insurance for older drivers because it takes account of experience, claims history, and day-to-day usage in a more meaningful way.

Levels of insurance cover available

Car insurance policies for older drivers are available in two main levels, allowing you to choose the right balance of cost and protection.

1. Comprehensive

Comprehensive cover gives the highest level of protection and includes accidental damage to your own car as well as cover for third party damage, fire, and theft. Under the scheme summary, comprehensive cover can also include medical expenses up to €650, personal belongings cover up to €200, Fire Brigade charges up to €1,500, and car hire cover up to €190 when repairs are carried out by an approved repairer.

2. Third Party, Fire and Theft

This level of cover protects against damage you cause to others while also covering your own car if it is stolen or damaged by fire. It can be a practical choice for drivers who want a strong middle ground between cost and protection.

Can I expect to pay less for my premium as an older driver in Ireland?

In many cases, yes. Drivers aged 50 and over can benefit from competitive pricing because insurers may be able to take account of longer claims-free histories, reduced mileage, and decades of driving experience. That said, premiums still depend on the full picture.

Pricing will usually reflect:

  • your claims and driving history

  • annual mileage

  • the type and value of the car

  • where the vehicle is kept overnight

  • any health disclosures that need to be made to keep the policy valid

For many drivers, the real advantage is not only competitive pricing but a policy that fits how they drive now, whether that means fewer journeys, more local trips, or a different routine after retirement.

Getting an Over 50s car insurance quote

Getting an Over 50s Car Insurance quote is about making sure your experience, mileage, and day-to-day driving habits are reflected properly from the start.

  • When requesting a quote, you will usually be asked for:

  • your driving history and claims record

  • annual mileage and how you use the car

  • vehicle details and where it is kept

  • any medical disclosures that need to be declared

Speaking to a specialist team can be particularly helpful if your circumstances do not fit neatly into a standard online form, especially if you are retired, drive fewer miles, or want to make sure an older car is insured appropriately.

Howden Insurance can support car drivers by sourcing car insurance quotes that reflect experience, claims history and lifestyle. Speaking with a broker allows you to explain these details clearly, helping to ensure your policy is accurate from the start and well-suited to experienced drivers whose circumstances may not fit neatly into standard online forms.

FAQs on 50+ Car Insurance

How is car insurance calculated for an older driver?

Car insurance is calculated using factors such as driving experience, claims history, vehicle type, annual mileage and medical disclosures, with age being only one consideration.

How does car insurance for over 60s in Ireland differ from standard car insurance?

Car insurance for over 60s in Ireland generally offers the same cover as standard car insurance but may be priced differently based on experience, claims history and mileage.

Can I get car insurance if I have a medical condition?

Yes, many drivers with medical conditions can still get car insurance, provided all relevant information is declared to the insurer.

Do I have to tell my insurance provider when I retire?

Yes, retirement should be disclosed, as it may change how and when you use your car and could affect your car insurance premium.

Can I be refused car insurance because of my age?

Insurers cannot refuse car insurance purely based on age, as decisions are based on a range of risk factors.

If I’m retired, is my car insurance likely to be cheaper?

It can be, particularly if you drive fewer miles and no longer commute during peak traffic hours.

At what age do I have to stop driving?

There is no upper age limit for driving in Ireland, provided your licence is valid and you meet medical requirements.

Can I still get car insurance after 75?

Yes. There is no general legal cut-off, although insurers may apply their own underwriting criteria and may ask for additional information depending on age and health disclosures.

Can Older drivers get insurance for older cars in Ireland?

Yes. Over 50s Car Insurance can still be suitable if you drive an older car, but the right level of cover depends on the car’s value, usage, and condition. Some drivers may prefer comprehensive cover for added reassurance, while others may decide that Third Party, Fire and Theft or Third Party Only is a better fit for a lower-value vehicle used occasionally. The key is making sure both the driver profile, and the vehicle profile are reflected accurately when the policy is arranged.

Are there any major differences between over 50s car insurance and over 70s car insurance?

The core cover remains similar, but insurers may request additional medical or licence information for drivers over 70.
